Helpful Tips for Cleaning Grout

Cleaning Grout

From entryways, bathrooms, and kitchens, tile is a beautiful and durable solution for many areas in your home. After all, tile is difficult to stain and easy to clean. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of grout lines between tiles. Grout picks up dirt like a magnet, is easy to damage, and the porous surface soaks up stains. To keep your grout looking great, use the tips below.

Standard dirt and grime:

Generally speaking, the best way to clean grout is water and elbow grease. All you need to do is pick up a specialized brush from a home improvement store and start scrubbing. Just make sure that you’re not scrubbing so hard that you damage the grout. If scrubbing and water water aren’t doing the trick, try adding a little vinegar to the water.

To remove mold:

Mold loves grout. After all, the porous surface gives the mold a great place to grow as it absorbs the moisture in your home. A go-to killer of mold is bleach. However, bleach will produce toxic gas when mixed with other household cleaners, like vinegar, so use with caution. Rather than grabbing bleach, try rubbing alcohol or vinegar instead. Both get the job done, and with fewer harsh fumes.

Get rid of tough stains:

Oxygenated bleach is a great solution for tough stains. However, it’s important to remember that this is a significantly harsher cleaning product, so please test it on a small area first. Additionally, please wear gloves, make sure that the area is well ventilated, and follow all product instructions. Odds are, the product will need to sit for about 10-15 minutes to work, but letting the cleaner sit too long on the grout can cause damage. As a result, we suggest setting a timer and thoroughly flushing the area with water afterwards.

For bigger areas:

Sometimes, you may need to clean a large area of grout lines. Obviously, you don’t want to be scrubbing an entire kitchen with a toothbrush, so consider using a steam cleaner instead. Of course, we’d be happy to tackle this project for you. Our tile cleaning process is effective and fast, and you won’t have to lift a finger.
